Eddystone Lighthouse, Plymouth, Devon mb-height 3988 Vincenzo Lunardi successfully ascended fromView of the Eddystone lighthouse, Plymouth, Devon, c1837, with a sailing ship and a rowing boat in a rough sea at its base. Built by John Smeaton 1n 1756 59, this was the third lighthouse on the Eddystone Rocks, 14 miles south of Plymouth, the previous two having been destroyed by storm and fire respectively. It stood until 1882, when it was replaced by the present lighthouse.
