Fred Kirby - Hillbilly Tunes AEC Video A member of the celloCharlotte, North Carolina native Fred Kirby (1910 1996) began his radio career in 1931 over WIS, Columbia, South Carolina. Returning to his hometown the following year, Kirby landed a slot on WBT. Briefly teaming with Cliff Carlisle, he cut his first records for Conqueror in 1932. His regional popularity led to recording sessions for Bluebird in 1936 and 1937.
