He was Indycar champion in 1922 and 1924, won the Indianapolis 500 in 1922 and the French Grand Prix of 1921. He drove Duesenberg cars at Indianapolis in 1920 1922. Murphy was killed in a dirt track racing accident at Syracuse, New York in 1924.
